History: Jen Arlaen, at fairly young age, has lead a tragic life compared to most. Her family once lived in the icy woods that border the town of Frost, prefering to keep to themselves, and only ever entering the town for food and supplies. This never really effected the young girl, happy to be with her family.
At the age of five, her family was attacked by a group of bandits, who intruded in their home to pillage for food. In his effort to protect his family, Jen's dad was killed right in front of her eyes. And as one bandit approached, the fear struck child lashed out with her magic, and froze the entire group, effectively killing them. But, without meaning to, her ice magic also froze most of her mother's body as well as she had no control over what her magic could do. It was only due to her mother's own exceptional skill in ice magic that she managed to stay alive while frozen. Despite her skill, her mother could not break out of the ice, and knew the skill of two ice magics would be needed to break the magic that kept her frozen. She did, however, manage to use her magic to allow her some mobility.
Abandoning their home in the woods, Jen and her mother managed to sneak their way into Frost, where she began training Jen to control her magic in one of the less populated areas of the town. During that time, her mom had managed to keep herself alive for the following three years it took for Jen finally master her control over her magic. During that time, her mother taught her that, at a young age, her family was naturally strong in ice elemental magic, and are born with a strong affinity to the element itself. It was one of the reasons the cold never bother them, treating cold weather as if it were summer.
Although the three years of training she had with her mother had started off hard, Jen slowly learned the joy of ice magic. Much of it had been used to play, whether it was making ice slides, silly sculpters, or simply making a little snow in their current place of living, she learned to love her magic as much as her mom had when she was young.
And after three long years of practice and training, Jen learned to control her magic just as skillfully as her ancestors, and it came time to release her mom from the freezing spell she had accidently cast on her. A day she quickly dreaded when it came. She had noticed that her mom was becoming less active in the following months, even if she put her all in helping teach her control. She didn't understand why she felt the way she did before that day, and asked her mom the day before why she felt so bad. Her mom, with some hesitation, explained why. Jen had known somewhere inside her that her mom was slowly dying ever since, using her magic and will to keep herself alive long enough to see Jen trained, and spend as much time with her as she could.
The next day, Jen became an orphan while crying over her mother's frostbitten dead body. It was night before she started digging an unmarked grave near their rundown home, hidden from view that no one would find. Using her ice magic, she did her best through tears making ice tools dig the hole, and even making a somewhat shoddy coffin around her mother's body. The morning sun had started to rise just as she finished filling the grave, with her mom at least a good four feet deep under cold stone and dirt.
Jen stayed in the run down house for the rest of the day, resting after hard night digging. As the day drew to a close though, she knew she needed to leave what they had called a home for the past three years. With more tears, she bid a final farewell to her mother's grave, and began to wander the streets of Frost alone.
She soon stumbled upon an orphanage that took her in, only for her to leave it three months later with a few friends. They children who were unfortunate to be taken in by this orphanage were forced to do lots of meaningless hard chores that no adult should ever make children do. And the food given was worse than the chores, often old leftovers or moldy bread. Sometimes it didn't even count as scraps. Having left the place, Jen and her friends had to start stealing food from distracted merchants to live.
This didn't last for long though as the local guard would soon start chasing them if they showed themselves. It was during one of these chases that Jen would find a branch of a thieves guild in Frost. During the chase from the guard, she and her friends decided to split and meet back up later. She slid through the streets using her magic, barely outpacing the guards chasing her. Rounding a corner of a street she saw one of the sewer workers climbing out of an open manhole, and decided to jump down, barely clambering safely to the ladder down the hole.
As Jen began to hastily climb down into the sewers, her foot slipped off the metal bar, and losing her grip altogether to fall hard on the stone path at the bottom. The fall itself wasn't too high, but it was enough to break her left arm and knock her unconscious. The guards who had been chasing her saw her limp form, and thought the fall had killed her, ordering the worker to close the manhole and to not speak of the incident.
A few hours had passed after this before Jen finally woke, and night had fallen above ground. She began to cry as the pain of her broken arm finally registered, carefully picking herself up to stumble through the maze-like sewer system. After nearly an hour of searching for an exit, she collapsed again from exhaustion.
The next time Jen woke, her arm had been splinted, and a loaf of bread sat on a bedside table. What followed next was a hungry girl destroying the bread with her mouth, and drinking down some offered water from a man she hadn't noticed immediately. Once her hunger had ebbed, she began bombarding the guy with questions about who he was, where she was at, and if her arm would be okay, wincing every once in a while from the pain in her arm. Once he calmed her down, he began to explain as best he could. He told her that arm would likely not set right, explaining that if she had been treated earlier it could have been avoided.
He then asked Jen what she had been doing in the sewers, which she answered that she been chased by guards for stealing food. To this, the man began to laugh uproariously, finding that a little girl was able to outrun some guards to be quite humorous. When his laughter ended, he explained that she had collapsed near the a Thieves Guild hideout, and extended an offer for to join them. He then went on to explain that she would be taught the ways of stealth and pilfering, and follow and honor the Code of the Thief, as well as be treated as family by all in the guild.
The thought of a new family stuck with Jen, and she began to tear up. Using her good arm, she clung tightly to man, sobbing loudly into his leather armor while accepting his offer. And so her new life as a thief began, finding that even though her training was challenging, she found she was a natural at it. The years practically flew by for her, and while she still hasn't mastered everything and has a long way to go, she is working hard to be one of the youngest Thief Masters in Terra Mystica.
Combat potential
Weapons: Currently confiscated: An ornate dagger, a leather whip, and a collapsible bow.
Armor: Light leather under armor, and leather arm and wrist guards.
Enchanted weapons/accessories: Currently confiscated: Spike shoes and claws for climbing, multi-purpose lock-pick, and a ring of disenchantment.
Weaknesses: Broken left arm as a child never set right so she can't hold more than her own weight when hanging off ledges, and even then it is painful for her to keep hold. Heightened sense of smell and hearing makes it hard to concentrate around strong smells or very loud sounds.
Magical potential
Special/Racial Abilities: Heightened sense of smell and hearing allows her to detect anyone up to fifty feet near her. She also has nocturnal sight, letting her see better in the dark.
Magical Affinity: Ice
Spells Known (15/35sP):
Ice Mirror(3sP): A spell meant for misdirection and distraction. When Jen uses this spell, she make herself look as if she were standing at one position when she's actually at another. She has used this spell to great effect when escaping from local law enforcers.
Crystal Mist(7sP): Jen created this spell for a more direct reliance on escape, though it drains her stamina to keep it up for extended moments of time. As she runs away or is cornered, she can spread an icy mist from her hands that cause anyone except herself and anyone else she considers a friend or ally to see multiple clones of herself. These are mere illusions rather than actual clones as any attempt to touch one will cause them to disappear and multiply further until the spell runs out. Jen herself can use this spell to knock her pursuers out if she wanted, but she mostly uses this spell to escape than fight.
Ice Slide(5sP): One of Jen's More fun spells as she uses it for mobility rather than escape, but can if she really needs to gain distance from the guard. Using her hand outstretched in front of her, she creates a slick platform of ice to slide around on(think Jack Frost's ice slide in Rise of the Guardians). The ice will melt on it's own, leaving a path easily followed, which is why Jen tries not to use it for escaping as it leads anyone to where she went. It's her favorite spell to use for fun as she can naturally propel herself on the ice rather than using more mana to do so.
