While there are no angels, demons, or even gods in the lost nation, there is one eternal being with a purpose for its existence; Death. While death has no true appearance, it takes the form of a skeletal human cloaked in a suit of shadow-like mass.
Death values neither good nor evil, a neutral entity. Its only purpose in the Terra Mystica is to bring fallen souls to the afterlife. Death has a set list of souls, telling it when each soul is meant to die, and follows that list diligently. Whenever it goes to collect a soul, it will wait for them from a distance, until the soul has fully left the body, and has relinquished all hope of returning to the corpse.
Should the soul be stubborn, and run away from Death, the soul shall be 'hunted down'. Death is omnipresent, and therefore can be anywhere at any time. Death is generally courteous to souls that have willingly accepted their fate. However, with souls that fight for their survival, it is not so merciful, wrapping the soul's body in a daggertail whip and dragging them to a worse afterlife than if they had come peacefully.
It is possible to cheat death, but there are unrecorded ways of doing so. One method is believed to be through the assistance of a skilled necromancer, casting the soul back into the body before Death can take it away. Whether or not this is true is uncertain and other methods are being studied, hoping to find the idealist's quest for immortality.
