Appearance: Derek appears as a slim, black-haired young man with some glaring physical differences. His ears are feline, though still in the same position as a normal human's. His eyes are a lush violet with a slitted pupil. His legs are structured halfway between a human's and the back legs of a cat, he is covered with smoky gray fur, and he has a catlike tail with a white-tipped tuft at the end. When extended, his retractable claws go about 3 inches from the tips of his fingers.
His usual clothing consists of a black shirt with the sleeves torn off and tan pants held up by a rope belt. He doesn't wear shoes.
Affiliation: Neutral
Weapons: His claws and hellfire.
Magic/Special abilities: Derek is capable of conjuring and manipulating hellfire towards various tasks, from augmenting a melee attack to blasting someone from a range to forming wings for short-range flight. His eyes also allow him to continuously see magical auras.
Strengths: Very strong willpower and resistance to enchantment magics, leg structure makes him somewhat faster than normal humans, moderate accelerated healing.
Weaknesses: Distrusting, pessimistic, leg structure prevents him from swimming well, has to deal with the Beast.
History: Derek has not lived a happy life. His parents abandoned him at birth because he was born with catlike ears, something they believed was the sign of a demon. As he grew up, other traits emerged. His eyes became violet and slitted. On his tenth birthday he grew a tail. Finally, at age 15, he grew fur and his leg structure changed overnight. All his life the people of the small town he lived in had hated and feared him, believing he was a demon. Noone ever adopted him, and so he has no last name. Mobs attacked him five times, trying to kill what they saw as a monster in their midst. The last attack occured at age 15. During the attack, Derek reflexively reduced a quarter of the mob to ashes with a burst of hellfire. After that, everyone lived in fear of him. At age 17, he left town, hoping to find somewhere he could gain some measure of acceptance.
He also has one other problem. A sinister entity within his mind known as the Beast that fights him for control of his body.
Unknown to Derek, the Beast is an ancient entity, heralding to a time centuries before the Lost Nations were separated from the modern world. The product of an arcane accident, this monster had the power to destroy entire continents. Even the strongest archmage of that time wasn't able to kill the Beast. So instead, he bound the Beast's soul to his own in a spell that, in the end, ended his life. As the archmage's soul passed into the afterlife, the Beast's soul was dragged from its body, causing said body to crumble into ash. In the centuries since then, the archmage's soul has been reincarnated in hundreds of individuals, known as the Harrowed. The only identifying traits for the Harrowed were their distinctive eyes - and their usage of a violet, unholy flame known as hellfire.
