Vampires
Vampires are a hidden undead race of the lost nation, often secluding themselves in the shadows because their bodies burn easily in the sunlight (first a sunburn, then it worsens to heavy 3rd degree burns and up). Their bodies lack the ability to produce iron and there is an absence of hemoglobin in their blood (the protein responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the circulatory system), because of this, their complexion is paler than that of their original race (before they were turned). A pair of fangs replace the canines in non predator creatures, allowing them to feed on the blood of living beings rich with the proteins they lack (no changes dentally for carnivorous races). They mostly prefer a secluded life from the living races, not wanting to get involved with the living because of their thirst for blood. However, there have been some cases where select vampires interact with the living, trying to stay connected to society despite their need for living blood.
If a vampire takes a particular liking to a victim that they feed on, they may drain him to the point of death and give him a choice: Drink the blood of a vampire and become one of the fold, or die. Often times than not the victim chooses to live on as a vampire, due to the nature of self preservation taking over. Once turned, they now serve their maker until released by their command.
Despite their tendency to mate only inside of their own race, some have strayed to the living races, but have only successfully conceived when mating with a living human. The appearance of the half breed depends on the mother: if born to a human mother, they will have a less pale complexion compared to if born to a vampiric mother. In either case, Half breeds are less vulnerable to sunlight, and have only been known to receive severe sunburns when exposed for extended periods, but nothing more. Half breeds are also known to feed less than pure vampires, because the hemoglobin and iron levels in their blood is half that of their human parent. Many people have used terms from the human world to name these beings: "day walker", "Damphir" and several others used in media and in legend.
In regards to both pure and half blooded vampires, the feeding method of both isn't as cruel as many would think...Unless the vampire chooses to make it as such. There are also different kinds of methods that one can take when feeding:
1) Once finding a suitable prey, the vampire will use a hypnotic gaze to draw them close. Unaware of what is happening to them, the vampire will sink their fangs into the victim and either drink enough to last until a later time, leaving the victim alive but lightheaded, or drain them dry and either kill or turn them.
2) The vampire will seduce the target and mate with them, feeding on them during the process, when their blood pressure is at its highest. Like with method one, the vampire has the choice of leaving their host alive, or killing/turning them.
Over time, vampires have developed a special venom in their saliva that dulls the pain of the bite, but it only works so much until pain takes over again if fed on roughly.
