Harpies
There are many different types of harpy, and each has a different type of lifestyle and disposition. Mostly a female race, the constant cross breeding between humans and harpies has resulted in some male specimens.
Appearance-wise, harpies are usually fairly beautiful to look at, but some researchers have reported seeing some of a more grotesque variety, being non appealing to both species.
Cockatrice
Harpies are seldom very large, but this variety is especially small. While they have wings, they are not strong enough for proper flight, barely gliding for a short time before touching ground again (as if their wings have been clipped). Instead, the race has developed powerful legs that allow them to scurry quickly across the ground.
Extremely timid in nature, a cockatrice will run away the instant she spots a human or large animal. However, a cockatrice's body emits a powerful pheromone - maybe an instinctive test of potential mate's fitness. Only one who is quick of mind and of feet can chase down a cockatrice and capture it.
When a cockatrice is caught, it will consider the captor to be their spouse. A married cockatrice will cease to emit pheromones to attract mates. Once the new mate regains their senses, they may try to leave; the cockatrice will head off any such attempts by immobilizing them with a petrifying gaze. They will use this same gaze to protect their children from invaders. A married cockatrice's lair is often marked with an assortment of human like statues. These immobilized individuals can be released from their petrified state with the use of a golden needle, like those found in a medusa's lair.
